After a few nights of itching the bottom can become very sore. This in itself will add to the misery. And if you are not infected but your kids are then no one in the street will get any sleep!

The itching occurs at night because tha is when the female pinworm becomes active in laying eggs. To do this she makes her way down the anal canal and ot through the rectum to begin laying eggs. Of course there will be many worms doing this at any one time. As they do so they ooze out a slimy mucus which irritates the sensitive skin. It is usually this that causes the itching rather than the movement of the pinworms themselves.

Because of this symptoms include the itching, they also include a feeling of lethargy due to constantly interrupted sleep and irritableness also down to tiredness. Symptoms do not include feeling hungry, this is a myth.

Pinworms can be transmitted very easily because their eggs are hardy. Anyone who comes into contact with these egss can be infected. It does not matter how old you are, what your state of health is or if you are fastidiously clean.

Children are more likely to get pinworms because they have a knack of putting their fingers in their mouths. This is normal “discovery” behaviour and children should not be admonished for doing this. What they need to be told to do is to wash their hands regularly especially after visiting the toilet and before mealtimes.
