The next thing to understand is that if only one person has a confirmed case of pinworms, then everybody who lives in the household must get treated. Its a drag but this point is very important if you really want to clear up an infestation.

The best treatments are relatively cheap and widely available, you can scroll through a selection of pinworm treatments here..

Treatment, however, is not the final answer. There is still quite a lot you need to do to ensure two things.

1) The person who was initially diagnosed with a pinworm infestation is cured.

2) Pinworm eggs are not left behind ready to infect everyone all over again.

The problem with treatments, and that’s all treatments, is that the pinworm eggs are very tough. They can survive almost anything.

They can survive on food preparation areas, door handles, TV remotes, sinks, bedclothes under fingernails and in carpets. So while you treat the infection, you must also keep your home and its occupants fastidiously clean.

Young children need to be watched to ensure they wash their hands on a regular basis, and always after using the toilet.
Young children however, should not be made to feel that they are dirty or have been bad. Parents should also be careful about talking about “worms inside” and “infestations” etc as these can be very frightening for a child.

Remember it is not your child’s fault that they have been infected with pinworms. A large number of the population suffer an infestation every year and globally infection rates are very high.

The pinworms themselves do not do much harm except cause irritation around the anus. this occurs when the female lays her eggs, usually at night. As they lay their eggs they produce mucus and this can inflame or irritate the delicate skin around the rectum. More damage is done by sharp finger nails scratching and damaging the skin.
